Jammu Flash Floods, Vaishno Devi Landslide: Several Dead, Rescue Ops On

Reasi, (Jammu) : Heavy rains caused a landslide on the way to Mata Vaishno Devi Dham in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. 32 devotees have died in the accident, while about 20 people are reported to be injured. The landslide near Ardhkunwari has affected the travel route. Relief and rescue operations are underway.

The landslide occurred near Indraprastha Bhojanalaya in Ardhkunwari cave temple located on the way to Vaishno Devi (Vaishno Devi Landslide) temple. A large part of the temple road located on Trikuta hill has been covered in debris. It is feared that more people may be buried under the debris. The army and administration are engaged in relief and rescue work.

Continuous rain in Jammu and Kashmir has created a situation of flood and landslides. Overbridges have collapsed in Jammu, power lines and mobile towers have been damaged. Three bridges have been damaged.

The pilgrimage has been stopped after a landslide on Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Marg on Tuesday. 

30 People Died In Landslide

According to SSP Reasi Paramvir Singh, 30 people have died in the landslide caused by heavy rains near the Vaishno Devi temple in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, while the number of injured has gone up to 20.

C130 and IL76 will soon fly from Hindon to Jammu carrying relief and rescue material after the landslide. Helicopters like Chinook, MI-17 V5 are ready at all the nearest airbases like Jammu, Udhampur, Srinagar and Pathankot.

After 2014 (11 years), such water devastation has been seen again in the division on Tuesday. Due to heavy rains for the last four days, life has come to a standstill in almost all the districts of the division. There has been heavy damage all around. All the major rivers of Jammu division are flowing above the danger mark. Hundreds of people in the affected areas have taken shelter in safe places.

'Rivers Flowing Above Danger Mark'

Giving information on the flood situation in the district, Ramban SSP Arun Gupta said that the situation is serious right now. Everyone is on high alert. We had to evacuate people from many places as the rivers are flowing above the danger mark. We are monitoring the situation. We have formed rescue teams at the police station and outpost level.

Army Rescues 22 Soldiers In Kathua

Floods hit Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir after incessant rains. The CRPF camp was damaged in the floods. Army helicopters rescued 22 soldiers and three civilians.

More Than 3,500 People Evacuated To Safer Places 

In a swift multi-agency operation led by the Jammu district administration, more than 3,500 residents have been evacuated to safer places after flash floods and waterlogging across the city on Tuesday. An official said that teams of district administration, police, NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army and local volunteers are carrying out evacuation and relief operations in the worst affected areas, while the authorities are also focusing on restoring critical infrastructure and essential services.

Jammu-Srinagar National Highway closed, 18 trains, two flights cancelled

Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is closed due to landslides at about 12 places from Jammu to Ramban. 18 trains coming to Jammu, Udhampur, Katra were cancelled due to flood-like situation at Chakki Pul Pathankot. Two flights from Jammu to Srinagar also had to be cancelled.

Heavy Rain Warning, Schools And Colleges Closed

The Meteorological Center Srinagar has issued a warning of heavy rain in the Jammu division for the next 24 hours. All government and private schools as well as colleges, coaching, universities in the division will remain closed on Wednesday. The High Court examination to be held on August 28 has been postponed. All non-essential offices have been closed on the orders of the Divisional Commissioner. Movement of common people has been banned after 9 pm.

CM Omar spoke to PM Modi

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has talked to PM Narendra Modi about the disaster in the state. The CM said that I informed him about the situation in the most affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir. I visited those parts of Jammu on the banks of the Tawi river. Where there was a lot of damage yesterday. I am grateful for his assurance of providing continuous assistance to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

LG expressed grief over the death of Vaishno Devi devotees

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed deep grief over the death of devotees at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple due to continuous heavy rains and landslides. Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, he prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He said that instructions have been given to the officials to provide immediate assistance. He wrote in a post on social media that the situation arising due to heavy rains in various parts of Jammu division is being constantly monitored. Emergency response teams and district officials have been deployed on a war footing in all the districts. Everyone is being urged to stay safe, follow the advisories and take all necessary precautions.

President Murmu expressed condolences on the landslide accident in Vaishno Devi

President Draupadi Murmu shared a post on Instagram on the landslide accident and wrote that the tragic incident of the death of many devotees in the landslide on the pilgrimage route of Mata Vaishno Devi temple is extremely sad. Further wrote that I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

PM Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the landslide accident in Mata Vaishno Devi by sharing a post on Instagram. Along with this, instructions have also been given to the administration.

22 trains coming to Jammu, Udhampur and Katra cancelled

Railways has stopped train operations due to soil erosion from the banks of Chakki river and flash flood like situation. Due to this, 17 trains were cancelled on Tuesday, while a large number of trains were run till Pathankot and Amritsar. 22 trains coming to Jammu, Udhampur and Katra will remain cancelled on Wednesday.
